Arrupe Jesuit High School

Arrupe sophomores were asked to consider their vision for themselves by the time they graduated.  They read the school's "Grad at Grad" statement, interviewed their parents, and reflected on the relationship between their parents' hopes for them and their own expectations.

Selected Student Journals:

"The Grad quality that I think I possess already would be 'intellectually competent' because this quality asks about being enthusiastic about learning and helping others.  I love to learn new things and I like to help others with work, like explaining things to make them more clear.

"The quality I hope to develop more over these next four years is to have the quality of 'work experience'.  I hope to possess this quality or develop it by... being a leader within all my worksites.  I would learn to develop this quality by becoming responsible at my work."

"My parents' wishes for me were to be self-motivated, responsible, successful, to never give up, to set and try to accomplish goals, and to be respectful.

"I currently posses some of the qualities from the Graduate at Graduation Statement.  For example, I believe I am respectful and have a deep, sincere knowledge of God's presence.  I understand that everyone is created for a unique purpose.  I believe that failure is part of maturity and learning.  I have love for myself and others.  I believe in equality for all people and I have begun to explore my own potential."

"The [Grad at Grad] quality I have right now is confidence.  The quality I need to develop over the next four years is awareness of injustice and prejudice.  I imagine I just need to look more."

"The only matches I found were to always be a leader and to work towards something I'm passionate about.  Those match up with 'committed to justice' and 'intellectually competent'.  They match up because in order to help people and our world we must remain leaders and represent those who cannot represent themselves.  To be a leader you must be aware of the injustices of the world.  But also believe in yourself and speak out.  You have to have that drive for change."
