FIVE ARRUPE JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NAMED DANIELS SCHOLARS
Collectively, The 54 Students In The Class Of 2010 Have Earned Over $3.5 Million In Merit-Based Scholarships

Arrupe Jesuit High School is pleased to announce that five seniors were named Daniels Scholars and will receive funding to attend the college or university of their choice.  These five students, Michael Gonzales, José Madrid, Michelle Ramirez, Lisa Solorio and Josiel Tamariz are all first generation college bound, and four of the five are first generation to graduate high school. These students will attend the Colorado School of Mines, Creighton University, Georgetown University and Regis University. Collectively, the 54 students in the Arrupe Class of 2010 have been accepted into 40 different colleges and have earned an Arrupe record of $3,579,900 in merit-based scholarships to date.

Arrupe Jesuit High School is a co-educational, college preparatory school that currently serves 300 economically disadvantaged students from Denver's inner-city neighborhoods. Without improved access to college, Denver's at-risk youth simply cannot compete in the region's workforce or economy. Arrupe Jesuit High School helps to reverse these patterns by providing an affordable, college preparatory education to hundreds of students who would have not had this opportunity otherwise.

One of the most distinguishing features of Arrupe's curriculum is the Corporate Work-Study Program.  One day per week, students work in entry-level jobs at 90 corporations and non-profits throughout Metro Denver.  In addition to giving students valuable work skills and exposing them to a variety of potential careers, the money that students earn through the program pays for approximately two-thirds of their school tuition ($5,000).Arrupe then works with each family to determine what they are able to pay, which is approximately $1,000 per year on average.  The remaining $1,850 per student is paid for through fundraising and tuition assistance.

The Daniels Scholarship program was established by cable pioneer Bill Daniels who was seeking promising students with financial need whose academic performance may not necessarily reflect their potential, but who demonstrate strength of character, a well-rounded personality and a record of accomplishment in giving back to the community.

The Daniels Scholarship is not "full ride," but is supplemental to all other financial resources, including an estimated family contribution, available to the student. By requiring students to apply for other readily available financial resources such as Pell Grants, the Daniels Fund is able to provide even more scholarships to deserving young people seeking to attend college.

After other financial aid resources have been applied, the Daniels Scholarship covers all required tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies and a variety of other miscellaneous expenses. Students also receive a laptop computer and a printer.
